Didn’t have a long career – the group only stayed together for five years – but they produced a small but indelible body of work that proved that punk rock had some life left in it. Formed in Nashville, Tennessee by singer, bassist and vocalist Nathan Vasquez, guitarist and vocalist Jonas Stein and drummer Jamin Orral in the middle of rap and pop punk dominated 2003, Be Your Own Pet combined girl group harmonies, a dynamite rhythm section and the best punk vocal since Iggy Pop to make beautiful noise rock that was unlike anything else. After releasing the three song Damn Damn Leash EP on indie label Infinity Cat Recordings in 2005, the band attracted the attention of indie rock elder statesman Thurston Moore who signed the quartet to his Ecstatic Peace imprint. It was through Ecstatic Peace that the band released 2006’s Be Your Own Pet, a raucous and frenetic album that sounded like Patti Smith doing the soundtrack to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. The record reached #47 on the UK Albums Chart and put Be Your Own Pet on the map. Eager to capitalize on their newfound fame, the band kicked off an extensive tour that included well-received stops at the Coachella and Lollapalooza music festivals and made a delightfully anarchic appearance on 'Late Night with Conan O’Brien.' After releasing three EPs through the end of 2006 and the middle of 2007, the group headed back to the studio to record their second LP, 2008’s poppy and relentlessly fun Get Awkward with new drummer John Eatherly.

Pearl attributed the breakup to exhaustion and a desire to pursue different musical directions.
